Drone insurance for FPV in Germany

Checked on

In Germany every drone needs liability insurance – however light, with or without a camera. That goes for a 5-inch freestyle quad as much as for a Tiny Whoop in the garden.

As of October 2026. Neither legal nor insurance advice – always read the terms of your policy.

Why insurance is compulsory

German air traffic law treats model aircraft as aircraft too. For them:

Flying without insurance breaches this duty – and in case of damage you are liable with your own assets.

Is my private liability insurance enough?

Often not. Many private liability policies exclude aircraft or cover drones only up to a certain mass or only without a camera. Check your terms:

  1. Are drones or model aircraft expressly included?
  2. Up to what weight? With a battery, FPV quads quickly exceed 500 g.
  3. Does cover apply to drones with a camera?
  4. Is the sum insured at least the legal minimum?
  5. Does cover apply in the open category without restrictions – also with FPV goggles and an observer?
  6. Are you insured as the keeper, i.e. also when a friend flies your quad?

If the policy is not clear about this, ask in writing.

The alternatives

With any offer, look at the points above – above all the weight limit and whether FPV is included.

What the insurance does not cover

Frequently asked questions

Do I need insurance for a Tiny Whoop under 250 g? Yes. The duty does not depend on weight.

Do I have to carry proof when flying? You must be able to show that you are insured. The easiest way is the insurer’s confirmation on your phone.

What is asked at registration? When you register as an operator with the Federal Aviation Office (LBA), it asks for your insurance. More in Drone licence in Germany: A1/A3 and A2.
